On October 4, 1960, a fire destroyed the Adath Israel Synagogue at 88 Mt. Pleasant St. in Whitney Pier. The Torahs, which did not survive, were buried in the Hebrew Cemetery. The synagogue was later rebuilt and now houses the Whitney Pier Historical Society Museum.
