Newman was the son of Louie and Eva Dubinsky. He had two siblings, Sam and Harry ( Hashey). He was married to Esther Goldman of Glace Bay. They had four children, Sylvia Dubinsky Allen, Leslie Dubinsky, Leon Dubinsky and Eve Dubinsky Carnat. He was a jovial person with a great personality and was involved in the local political scene. Entering his house on any occasion on the Esplanade in Sydney, it was not unusual to see members of the Liberal Party or even the Premier of Nova Scotia. He had many friends and was a member of the Temple Sons of Israel choir for many years. He had a deep bass voice and he loved to perform music of any kind. He also played guitar. He was a mensch.
