Sam Shiah Gaum was my paternal Grandfather, He was born in a small Shtetl in Belarus called Kozhan Horodok and came to settle in Sydney in 1910. His original family name was LATUCHA and how it was changed is a story I tell in my book, From Belarus To Cape Breton and Beyond. The shul has a copy. He remained in WhitneynPier for his entire life. His brothers in law were Louie, Bendit, Volf, and Pasach Gaum. His wife was my Grandmother Fanny Gaum and they resided at 842 Victoria Rd., in the Pier. They had a store called Gaum’s Popular store. In the 1920s, the Jewish community was a vibrant, growing and successful community.
