Ephraim Feder (1899-1976) (son of Shmuel Aaron Reichman Feder and Miriam Kantor Feder) was born in Tauroggen, Russland on March 14, 1899 and came to Sydney in 1910. He got a job with Mr. Glickman who taught him to repair watches. He opened a watch repair and jewelry store from the age of 16. He used all the family jewelry and musical instruments to get started. His first store was at the foot of Lingan Road. He later had a jewelry store on Victoria Road for many years. He was married to Bella Gaum. They had two children, Arnold and Frances. He passed away on December 19, 1976.
When I was very young, I wanted a Mickey Mouse watch, as I was a fan of the popular TV show called “The Mickey Mouse Club”. My Uncle Ephraim sold these watches in his jewelry store. Uncle Ephraim told me that if I learned to tell the time, he would give me one. What motivation! My parents helped me, and as soon as I learned to tell the time, I went to Uncle Ephraim’s. He asked me to tell him what time it was, and since I read his watch correctly, he gave me my own Mickey Mouse watch! This first watch is one I will never forget.
A funny story about Ephriam my dad told me many years ago. It seems that a young man injured his hand while working at the steel plant. His hand started to swell badly and they rushed him over to Ephriam’s store to remove a ring he wore on one of the injured fingers. Ephriam took one look at the injured, bleeding hand, and picked up a metal cutter to cut the ring off. In a quiet, but excited voice he said, ” Quick, bring a glass of water!” Someone rushed out to get the urgent water and brought it to Ephriam. He took it in his shaking hand, wiped the sweat off of his brow, and then…….. drank the entire glass in one gulp. Every one gasped as they thought he needed it for the surgical procedure. But we must remember, Ephriam was a jeweller, not a doctor. God bless him and may he rest in peace.
