Dr. Abe was the son of Louie and Pearl (Moraff) Gaum. He was a GP medical doctor who spent his entire life in service to the people of Cape Breton. He was the brother of Dr. Dave and Pinky Gaum, as well as sisters Libby Brenner,Bunny Davidson, Bella Gaum and Etta Chernin.
One day, while he was on call at City Hospital, he developed pain in his left jaw. He immediately recognized it as a heart attack and admitted himself. His diagnosis was correct, and after a massive heart attack, he dies in hospital at age 75 years. At his funeral, there was a line up of mourners from Ashby Corner, all along Victoria Road in the Pier. Thousands attended his funeral to show respect to a man who devoted his life to the people of Cape Breton.
My Father was a gifted surgeon, who also had a general practice which included Obstetrics. He and his brother, Dr. David Gaum were very innovative and established a dialysis clinic in memory of their parents. Larry’s description of the funeral is indeed correct.Winston E. Gaum.
