Obituary from Sydney Memorial Chapel:
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Faye “Tootsie” (Allen) David, on July 18, 2024, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Mom was born in 1928 in New Waterford, the daughter of Ikie and Rose (Epstein) Allen. A precocious child, she followed her older brother Louie to school one day and never left, graduating from Central School at the tender age of 16. Old enough to graduate but too young to enroll in nursing school, she worked in the family grocery business until 1949, when she moved to Montreal.
She remained in Montreal for 9 years, working in the insurance industry, which she truly loved. In 1958, she returned to Cape Breton to marry her beloved, Isaac “Ike” David, to whom she was happily married for 52 years until his passing in 2010.
She and Ike ran Ike's Delicatessen, an iconic mainstay on Charlotte Street for 40 years, until they both retired in 1990, spending the winters in Florida for the next 15 years. They both loved the business and worked very hard and long hours but through all of this, they made many lifelong friends.
Always one to be social, Tootsie continued to forge new friendships after moving to Parkland in 2020. She shared many an enjoyable meal in the Parkland dining room and could often be found in the audience on the 3rd floor listening to the choir.
There are so many people who were part of Faye’s life. We especially want to thank Louise Vassallo, Tish McNeil and Wendy Cohen-Ross who provided amazing care and support for mom in her later years, and to Reg Bonner and Mary Muise with whom she and Ike created an inseparable bond.
Tootsie is survived by her daughter, Laurel and son, Phil, both living in Toronto and by her many Allen and Simon nieces and nephews and their families in Toronto/New York, and by niece and nephew Shayna (Allen) and Darren Strong of New Waterford along with their sons, Ethan and Manny, who were like grandchildren to her.
She was predeceased by her loving husband Ike, her sister Nettie (Nate) Simon of Glace Bay/Toronto and her brother Louie (Sylvia) of New Waterford, a town she loved.
